Foundation Stage 2
We have 3 F2 classes at Shinfield Infants. This is for the 4-5 year olds. Each class has a teacher and a full time teaching assistant. The children learn through exploratory play. They are given the opportunity to explore a range of fun, exciting and stimulating activities through a balance of adult-led and self-directed activities. These activities encourage the children to become increasingly independent which builds self-esteem and confidence. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is split into 3 prime areas of learning, communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development. We also teach the specific areas of learning, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design. The children use the outdoor environment to enjoy plenty of activities. We teach phonics in ability groups using the Ruth Miskin Read, Write Inc. scheme. In the Spring term we also have ability groups for maths. The main reading scheme followed in school is the Oxford Reading tree, but we have a comprehensive selection of other reading material from different schemes, both fiction and non-fiction. We follow broad topics and also take the interests of the children in to our planning. Additional information relating to the curriculum may be obtained from the school schemes of work, available on request. Workshops are held on a regular basis to inform and support parents and carers so that they can support their child’s learning. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information about Early Years. Mrs Edwards Deputy Head and Foundation Stage Leader
