We currently have 3 Year 2 classes at Shinfield Infants and Nursery School. This is for the 6-7 year olds. Each class has a teacher and a full time teaching assistant (some job share). One to one support is provided for children who have additional needs.
The children learn through a range of carefully structured activities. As in Year 1 they are given the opportunity to explore a range of fun, exciting and stimulating activities. These activities encourage the children to become increasingly independent which builds self-esteem and confidence. A popular activity in Year 2 is the ‘Group Challenge’ which is set by teachers and encourages collaborative work and active listening.
We follow the 2014 National Curriculum. Activities are planned around broad themes throughout Key Stage 1 so that children have plenty of opportunities to learn and practise new skills through interesting and exciting experiences. These take place both indoors and outdoors.
As for Year 1, subjects covered include Computing, Science, History, Geography, PE, Music, RE, PSHE, Art and DT. More information on what is covered is given in our school prospectus and in the topic grid and curriculum news attached. There is also useful information at the back of the children’s school planners.
We teach phonics in ability groups using the Ruth Miskin Read, Write Inc. scheme. During phonics lessons we also teach and practise spelling. We also teach in ability groups for Maths. Intervention and individual assistance is given as appropriate, for example small group work or individual help with sound linkage, precision monitoring and Reading Rescue which all target specific learning needs. The main reading scheme followed in school is the Oxford Reading Tree, but we have a comprehensive selection of other reading material from different schemes, both fiction and non-fiction.
Year 2 are expected to read at home at least four times a week in order to practise and develop their reading skills. Maths targets also need to be practised at home regularly. Reading comprehension homework is also set for the more able readers.
Additional information relating to the curriculum may be obtained through the Curriculum News for each half term from the school schemes of work, available on request. Workshops are held on a regular basis to inform and support parents and carers so that they can support their child’s learning.
Year 2 have additional responsibilities in school, for example ‘Playground Helpers’ and tour guides for the new intake of children and parents starting at the school in September. They also have the opportunity to learn the recorder in an after school club.
The annual Year 2 trip this year is to the Hexagon to see a show. Year 2 also enjoy a Medieval Banquet and various exciting visitors including ‘Feathers and Fur’, or a mobile planetarium.
Below are a number of videos clips which demonstrate how we teach subtraction, multiplication, addition and division in Year 2.
